On June 11th the Center for Food Safety and Security Systems (CFS3) hosted visitors from around the world through the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP). The program was arranged by World Learning and administered through the World Trade Center Institute (WTCI). This program works to connect international visitors with American professionals to share best practices in particular fields to increase mutual understanding.  This is the second time that CFS3 has hosted international visitors through this program.

This group consisted of 22 visitors comprised of trade specialists, economy policy makers, and agricultural and food safety experts from 22 different countries. They are visiting the U.S. on a program titled “U.S. Agricultural Trade and Food Safety,” to become better acquainted with the agricultural research and services through extension programs as well as poultry management.

Dr. Daniel Kugler, Assistant Dean for Special Programs, International Programs in Agriculture & Natural Resources within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Maryland opened the presentation by welcoming the group and providing them with some information on current AGNR international programs.

Dr. Robert Buchanan, Director of the Center for Food Safety and Security Systems, then presented on the Center’s mission, vision, goals, activities, and collaborative research. Dr. Buchanan’s presentation included discussion of the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN) which operates under CFS3. Dr. Buchanan discussed the various training and education programs and laboratories within JIFSAN, which include the International Food Safety Training Laboratory, the Risk Analysis Program, the International Training Program, and other international research and collaboration programs.

“Our visitors were very impressed with the activities of CFS3/JIFSAN in research and training, and were excited about our ability to work collaboratively around the world,” said Dr. Buchanan.  “I fully anticipate that at least three of the countries represented at the meeting will be exploring how they too can work with the University of Maryland.”
