Analysis of Fooborne Pathogen in Tomatoes, Irrigation Water & Soil Samples on Mid-Atlantic Farms

Small and medium-sized conventional and organic farms located in Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey were visited over the summer and sampled for tomatoes, irrigation water, compost and soil. The samples were analyzed for foodborne pathogens and indicator organisms. The study is ongoing and spinach and lettuce samples are currently being collected and tested. The team consisted of research and extension faculty, post-docs, graduate and undergraduate students. The project is providing excellent opportunities for undergraduate research experience, and the work was presented at the AGNR Open House on October 6th.

March 29th Robert Buchanan and Clare Narrod were part of the IOM committee briefing of an IOM study “Ensuring Safe Foods and Medical Products Through Stronger Regulatory Systems Abroad” that was commissioned by FDA for FDA Centers directors at White Oak. Both were members of the committee that wrote the reports which was released on April 4th at the National Press Club.

CFS3/JIFSAN Presents Risk Analysis Training to Government Officials in India

As part of a USDA Foreign Agriculture funded program, CFS3/JIFSAN organized and presented a three-day training workshop on risk analysis to government officials in Hyderabad India. Dr. Robert L. Buchanan, Dr. Abani Pradhan, and Dr. Juliana Ruzante of the University of Maryland and Dr. Richard Goodman of the University of Nebraska organized the course, with the former developing the training materials in risk analysis and the latter providing materials on food allergens and allergens in GM foods. The workshop was held at the National Institute for Nutrition and was attended by 75 government officials and is part of the USDA and FDA efforts in regulatory capacity building in India. Based on the feedback we receive afterwards, the training sessions were highly successful.

Center Director Honored with the Designation of Silliker Lecturer for 2010 IAFP Annual Meeting

Dr. Robert L. Buchanan, CFS3 Director, was the designated Silliker Lecturer for the 2010 International Association for Food Protection Annual Meeting. Buchanan gave a riveting lecture entitled "Understanding Foodborne Microorganisms: A Matter of Perspective," which outlined how the scientific perspective has grown regarding the study of microorganisms, their microenvironments and the diversity which occurs within a population of microbial cells.
